Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bears books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Though Stan died in 2005 and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.

In The Berenstain Bears Why Do Good Bears Have Bad Days, Sister and Brother Bear decide to go on a bike ride and fishing trip in the countryside. After a hopeful start, things go very wrong. Brother falls into the pond, Sister’s fishing rod breaks, and they get caught in the rain on the way home. Why did this bad stuff happen to them? It’s not fair! Mama and Papa share with the cubs that good is mixed with the bad and sometimes the good is hard to see. But soon the family concludes that God has a plan for everything and faith in his plan allows us to trust that good will come in the end. The Berenstain Bears Living Lights stories serve as early readers, excellent read-alouds, and engaging conversation starters.

Great conversation starter! We have always loved The Berenstein Bears. I have many originals from my childhood that we read with our children. I pre-ordered this book hoping it might help my kids understand why we have good and bad days. I do like how the story lines goes. I did have to explain the ending for my children to fully understand it. The question was "why does God only protect our soul and not our bodies?" I had to explain that only our souls go to heaven, not our bodies or worldly possessions. They understand it better now and thus why I gave it a 4 star. Thank you Mike for continuing what your parents started. We also loved the other new book called Pet Rescue since we foster orphan kittens.Sweet religious story Parents should be aware this is not a typical story where the cubs or the parents get into scrapes and have to resolve them. Rather, it’s a religious story and should be read in advance to see if the author’s beliefs are similar to theirs. This starts off as a lively tale with Brother and Sister having a run of bad luck on what was supposed to be a fun day fishing. Then they are rained on and get drenched. Arriving home in a grumpy mood, they wonder if God is mad at them. Their parents advise them that God can’t cancel a thunderstorm just because they are outside, but he always watches over their souls. It’s not the mischievous Berenstain Bears of many years ago, but for a family with religious beliefs similar to the author, it’s a sweet story, a good way to learn new vocabulary, and the expressions on the cubs’ faces show the usual high quality we’ve come to expect over the years. I think I would have rated this higher if the title reflected the religious content, which will be appropriate for some, but won't work for others.
